Eager to Read: Wyatt's story

(a letter from Terri Patterson of Pennellville, mother of Wyatt, age 7)

Thank you very much for offering the reading program this summer. I fought alongside my son’s teachers this past school year in regards to reading. He just didn’t want to read and he wouldn’t try. He would tell me it was boring and he didn’t want to do it. He wanted to be read to but not for him to read. He expressed just how much he didn’t like it. I was expecting the upcoming school year to be a bigger challenge.

But yesterday. On our way to camp, he asked me what day it was. When I told him Tuesday, he was disappointed because he was hoping it was Wednesday. Wyatt, age 7, reads with a friend during Camp Y-Noah, at the North Area Family YMCA, this past summer. Wednesdays are reading tutor days. I was shocked to hear him say that. He went on to tell me just how much he loved reading now!

I was so thrilled! Thank you so much for giving him the little bit of extra help he needed. He said he had fun in the tutor sessions and really loves to read now. Our book time at night is no longer going to be just me reading to him, but the both of us taking turns with no arguments!

He is definitely more confident. Thank you, thank you, thank you for offering the tutoring program at camp. I hope the program continues every year!

P.S.: He enjoys the math, too! He wasn’t struggling so much with math but I figured the extra help would be good for him!

The YMCA of Greater Syracuse Academic Support Program is offered during all YMCA summer day camps and in Y branches during the school year. Our certified teachers provide homework help and group instruction in the subjects kids struggle with most, including ELA and Math. The Academic Support Program is FREE for all kids in day camp and for family members. Why? Because at the Y, we believe all kid deserves a chance to reach their full potential. The Y offers financial aid to ensure that all kids from all families can afford to become members and get the help they need.
