Mike Brown Named as New CEO

Mike BrownThe YMCA of Greater Syracuse announced today that Mike Brown has been named the organization’s Chief Executive Officer. Brown is scheduled to step into this role on November 13, 2017. The decision was reached after a comprehensive, volunteer-led national search by the YMCA of Greater Syracuse Metro Board of Directors, with assistance from the YMCA of the USA.

Brown comes to Syracuse from the YMCA of Rock River Valley in Rockford, Illinois. As CEO, he led the organization through significant growth from 2011 to 2017, increasing the annual operating budget from $8M to $12M. Brown also led his association’s efforts in increasing annual giving to the Y from $350,000 to $1.1 million and oversaw the addition of the new Puri Family YMCA to the six-branch Rock River Valley YMCA.

Brown will be taking over for Hal Welsh, who is retiring after serving as CEO of the YMCA of Greater Syracuse since 1993 and 42 years of service to the Y. Welsh is credited with turning the Syracuse-area Y around from the brink of failure to the growing, impactful and financially-sound force in the community that it is today. Brown will oversee the 7 branches of the YMCA of Greater Syracuse, including Camp Iroquois, the Downtown Men’s and Senior Residence and the wide variety of programs and services that strengthen our community daily.

"I am honored to have been chosen to lead the YMCA of Greater Syracuse and continue to build upon the legacy of Hal Welsh,” said Brown. “My family is excited about the move to New York as it puts us closer to family. We can't wait to settle in and meet the staff, volunteers and donors of this wonderful association."
