Shineman Foundation Challenges NWFY

Dr. Barbara P. Shineman, chairman of the board of directors of the Richard S. Shineman Foundation, challenged the Northwest Family YMCA (NWFY) to raise $100,000 in new gifts and pledges. In doing so, the Foundation will match, 1 to 1, up to $100,000 in donations raised between August 1 and November 15, 2015. Upon completion of the challenge, the NWFY will receive the Foundation’s award. On Thursday, September 3rd, Dr. Shineman and Karen S. Goetz, Executive Director of the Shineman Foundation, presented a giant check to Hal Welsh, Executive Director of the Greater Syracuse YMCA, and Lisa Pachmayer, Executive Director of the North and Northwest Family YMCAs, as a symbolic gesture of the Foundation’s challenge to the NWFY to secure matching gifts to help complete the new facility.

The Oswego-based Foundation awarded the $100,000 matching grant to the campaign for the Northwest Family YMCA in August. This the first campaign gift from the Foundation, which aims to be a “catalyst for change,” by funding community programs in Upstate New York. “The Shineman grant has truly been a catalyst for the campaign,” said Elizabeth Quilter, Chief Development Officer for the Greater Syracuse YMCA. Quilter added that there is $500,000 left to raise to make the $6 million campaign goal.

The Shineman Foundation was established by Dr. Shineman’s late husband, Richard, through a charitable bequest. The Foundation uses its financial resources to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations which enhance the quality of life in Central New York and Oswego County. The Foundation seeks to build relationships with its non-profit partners, allowing them to become more effective and strengthen social bonds that will bring communities together.

For more information on how members of the community can show their support through a gift to the campaign, visit www.NWFY.org or call Elizabeth Quilter, Chief Development Officer for the YMCA of Greater Syracuse, at 315-530-5979.
