CreatIVE Writing workshops at the DWC

They say writing is a solitary pursuit—and yet I shudder to imagine attempting it without the essential support of my friends and mentors at the DWC. It is there that I find the necessary criticism to do it better and the generous encouragement to do it again.

--Michael Petrosillo, DWC PRO fiction student and published fiction author.

NEW! WINTER 2019 Workshops for adults

Whether you are just curious about writing poems or stories, or are an experienced writer seeking serious critique, the Downtown Writers Center has programs for you. Each year, we offer over 70 workshops and courses for writers of all experience levels: poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama, screenwriting, songwriting, and more. And if you're a YMCA of Greater Syracuse member, you can take a class for free each season! All courses are taught by professional writers who are ready lead you on your creative journey.

DWC PRO is a two or three-year intensive program for poets, fiction writers and creative non-fiction writers who are serious about honing their craft and growing their careers. Our program is designed especially for writers who will benefit from focused study--the same kind offered by an MFA program, but without relocation or high cost. As a DWC PRO student, you will take advanced courses, receive individual feedback, and work with established writers who will mentor you as you complete a manuscript that is publication-ready.

The young authors academy

If you are a teen or tween who is interested in creative writing, the DWC's Young Authors Academy (YAA for short) is the place for you. Students in grades 6 through 12 join us on Saturdays at the DWC for serious instruction in the craft of writing. You'll work with the same terrific instructors who teach in our adult program, and meet peers who are just as passionate about stories as you are. A new round of YAA programming will start in October... call 474-6851 x380 for details.
