Poet BRIAN TURNER

Free and Open to the public.

Soldier-poet Brian Turner served seven years in the US Army, including one year as an infantry team leader in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. He was also deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999-2000 with the 10th Mountain Division. He is the author of two poetry collections, Phantom Noise (2010) and Here, Bullet (2005) which won the 2005 Beatrice Hawley Award, the New York Times “Editor’s Choice” selection, the 2006 Pen Center USA “Best in the West” award, and the 2007 Poets Prize. Turner’s newest book, the memoir My Life as a Foreign Country, retraces his war experience, pre-deployment to combat zone, homecoming to aftermath, painting a devastating portrait of what it means to be a soldier and a human being. This program is presented by the SU Humanities Center, as part of the 2014 Syracuse Symposium on Perspective.

Programs of the Arts Branch of the YMCA are made possible, in part, by funding from the County of Onondaga, administered by CNY Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
